Girls Have EGGs like Chickens

Note: This may contain some adult chicken language and some chicken parts not suitable for young viewers. A special thanks to Prop 8 for the Chicken talk with my kids. FHE was a blast.

Today in the car with all 4 kids this was the conversation:

  • Willow: Why do people steal the Prop 8 signs?

  • Mom: They are frustrated that some people want to vote YES. When we vote YES what we are really voting for is that only boys and girls can get married... So two girls can't get married, and two boys can't get married. It hurts their feelings that we don't want that.

  • Willow: Why can't they get married?

  • MOm: The Prophet said only a boy and a girl should get married. Heavenly Father wants families with a Daddy, Mommy, and little kids.

  • Willow: Heavenly Father won't give a baby to two girls that get married?

  • Mom: Nope, it takes a boy and a girl to have a baby (Note Mom is becoming more and more uncomfortable with the direction of the converstation)

  • Willow: That's why babies look like both their mommy and their daddy, like Lily. How does Heavenly Father decide what parts on the mommy and what parts on the daddy to make on the baby? How does the baby actually get in there?

  • Poppy: (Yelled from the back seat) GIRLS HAVE EGGS LIKE CHICKENS

Talk about a sucker punch. I thought I was going to get whiplash my head swung around so fast. Since when did the birds and the bees include chickens? Since when did my 4 year old learn more than the 7 year old? Maybe I ought to rethink how I am going to talk about "IT" with my girls. I wonder how many other parents are explaining the virtues of PROP 8 with their children? After further questioning Poppy did not know that roosters have sperm. Yikes. I explained in Family Home Evening that girls do have eggs but they are very little and don't come out like chickens do. Poppy and Willow seemed relieved. I didn't see the need to point out that a baby comes out instead. We sang Chicken Families Can Be Together Forever to close our eventful FHE. Once again I deliver a most spiritual lesson.

Very observant children...you're so lucky....I actually think it might be easier to lay an egg than birth a baby!

Oh my heck, I'm laughing outloud. After having their own, they'll wish it was as easy as laying an egg!

Bethany had lots of questions for me when I was pregnant, but not showing yet, "So, how do you KNOW you're pregnant?" I just don't want to burden her with the knowledge of her impending monthly cycle just yet...

Emily, I know. I want to give my kids the right information at the right time... but who knows when or what that is? Good luck trying to answer the questions honestly without giving too much information. I'm just glad I didn't have to get into HOW babies are made. Maybe a book about chickens would be a good start. I think I am going to block the animal planet.

That's so funny! We just had the chicken talk last week on the way to church. It went about the same way. My sister Jodi refered me to the American Girl book about growing up. The girls really liked it. It was pretty easy to talk about with a book to help. I wish we could just skip over the part that mom and dad did that to get you here. That didn't go over too well. They think Tim is the devil now. They felt sorry for me that I had to do that 4 times.

That is too funny! Good luck with Prop 8. Our thoughts and prayers are with the entire state of Cali. If things don't work out, there are plenty of houses for sale up here- smile.

Awesome! Love the conversations that we have with kids nowdays!

I have yet to have the TALK with Madison and I really want to avoid it until after this baby comes. I don't want to scar her with the thought of IT happening so recently with her dear old parents!

I'm just clunking away here...or is it squawking? Just where did she learn we have eggs too? I don't know if I want to know what Allison does and doesn't know. All I do know is that Craig will go into hiding when all this "talk" happens. I was thinking the mommy talks to the girls and the daddy talks to the boys. Wouldn't you say that is pretty fair? Well, maybe not in your house, but in my house it is!

The things they know ...Savannah will tell anyone who asks that she "wants to be a boy so she doesn't have to have a baby and get a shot in her bum." I tell her when she has a baby that will be the least of her concerns ;-)
